One part gin, one part vermouth rosso, and one part Campari, garnished with an orange peel.
The classic Negroni cocktail may seem simple, but the flavours it boasts are anything but. It is a drink that manages to strike a perfect balance between the complex botanicals of the gin, the sweetness of the vermouth, and the bitterness of the Campari.
While the exact origin of the drink is unknown, the most popular story surrounding its creation takes place around 1919 in Florence, Italy, at Caffe Rivoire, where Count Camillo Negroni asked the bartender, Fosco Scarselli, to strengthen his favourite drink, the Americano (equal parts sweet vermouth, Campari and soda water) by replacing the soda water with gin. Scarselli then added an orange peel garnish instead of the usual lemon, so people would know it was not an Americano.
Since then, countless variations and twists of the drink have been created by bartenders worldwide (such as the bourbon-based Boulevardier and the rum-based Kingston Negroni), but the core bitter/sweet flavours still remain.
In 2013, Imbibe Magazine and Campari launched the first ever Negroni Week to celebrate of one of the world’s great cocktails, and also to raise money for charities around the world. Held every June for a week, the annual event has since grown from 120 participating venues to over 7,700 venues around the world (including Malaysia), collectively raised nearly US$1.5mil for various charitable causes.
From today until June 10, participating bars and restaurants will be serving classic Negronis as well as their own twists on the cocktail, with a certain percentage of the proceeds going to the venue’s chosen charity.
